Flight came to Brooklyn in the early 1930s. Previously every once in a while there’d be a plane flying over — quite a special event. On May 23, 1931, Floyd Bennett Field officially opened in the Marine Park section of Brooklyn at the far end of Flatbush Avenue. It was the city’s first municipal airport, named for the aviator that flew Admiral Byrd across the North Pole in 1926 ... The airport was built on the wastes of Barren Island (aptly named) ...
